Fifteen

Mackensey

When I arrive at Café DeMilo, which is located in the courtyard of the KQCC office building, Mimi is there waiting for me. “You’re late.”

“I know, I’m sorry. Something came up,” I say.

“You’ve had a lot come up lately, Mac.” She slides half of her scone toward me, but I shake my head. I can’t eat, I’m too on edge. Too thrown by what’s happened today.

She gestures toward me and says, “You ready to tell me what’s been happening?”

I watch her, waiting, not knowing how to begin. I decide to start with the obvious. “Babe McHottee.”

“What about her?” She raises an eyebrow. “I assume she is the one you took with you to Reno last weekend. The same one you got drunk with on Saturday.”

“She didn’t know.”

She rolls her eyes. “Really?”

“It’s true.” I raise my hands, palms up. “She doesn’t listen to the show. At least, not until this week.”

“How did you meet her if she doesn’t know you from the show?” she asks.

I tell her the entire story, from Kelley crying on the bench outside Starbucks, to our drive to Reno and the incredible time we had at the Comedy Fest––then I stop dead in my tracks.

“So, what aren’t you telling me?”

I stare at her for a moment, then I spit it out. “On Saturday, after all the drinks, we went to an all-night chapel and got married.”

I’m waiting for her to start laughing like Emily did… but she doesn’t. She just watches me.

“Say something, Mimi.”

She tilts her head, examining me. “Mac, I’ve known you for what, eight, nine years, now?”

“Almost ten,” I say. “I was your intern my senior year of college.”

“What can I say? You’re a bit neurotic, especially since you stopped drinking. You’ve definitely never done anything so unpredictable and impulsive. There must be something behind it.” She shrugs. “Do you love her?”

I’m speechless. I wasn’t expecting that. I was expecting… derision. “That’s an interesting question.”

“That’s a no.”

“It’s complicated.”

She draws her eyebrows together and says, “You either love her, Mac, or you don’t. Which is it?”

Now I’m staring at her, and I’m speechless again. I’m not sure about anything. I widen my eyes and say, “Is that what this is? Is this what it feels like?”

Now she’s laughing at me. “Oh, honey…”

“This isn’t funny.” I place my hands on my chest and say, “This is for real, Mimi, and I don’t know what to do.”

She covers her mouth with her hand and I know she’s trying to hide her amusement. “I’m sorry, but you’re so cute. You really don’t recognize these emotions, do you?”

When I give her an incredulous look, she bobs her head and says, “Okay. Listen, don’t do anything until you’re sure. Don’t push her away and don’t pull her closer.” She points at me. “Figure out what you want before you screw with her. If you’re not sure, you’re only going to do more damage.”

“I think I kind of just moved her into my house.”

She leans forward. “You what?”

“She was living in a bad, unhealthy situation, so I removed her from it.
